Book Reader is a personal ebook library that reads your EPUBs aloud with text-to-speech, highlighting each sentence as it is spoken, with optional AI voices, OCR for scanned pages, and translation. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and who processes it. We designed Book Reader to collect as little as possible: reading with the free browser voice happens entirely on your device.
When you create an account, our authentication provider (Clerk) stores your email address and sign-in credentials. We keep your email and an account identifier to operate your account and, if you subscribe, link it to your plan. We never see or store your password.
Paid subscriptions are handled by Stripe. Stripe processes your card details directly — we never receive or store your full payment information. We keep only a Stripe customer identifier and your current plan and subscription status.
EPUB files you upload are stored on our servers so your library is available on any device you sign in from, along with metadata extracted from each book (title, author, cover) and your reading position. Your books are private to your account: we do not share them, read them for any purpose other than serving them back to you, or use them to train models. Deleting a book from your library deletes the file from our servers.
When you use the Natural (AI) voice, translation, or OCR on a scanned page, the relevant text or page image is sent to our server and on to Google (the Gemini API) to generate the spoken audio, the translated text, or the recognized text, then returned to you. This happens only for the pages and moments you actively choose. Reading with the free on-device browser voice does nottransmit the book text — that speech is produced by your own browser. We do not retain this content beyond what is needed to serve the request and short-lived caching (for example, a translation so replaying the same chapter doesn't re-translate it).
When a reading starts, we record a minimal event — whether the browser or AI voice was used, the number of characters, which book, a timestamp, your IP address, and a randomly generated device identifier stored in a cookie. We use these to enforce fair-use and free-tier limits (for example, the 3-readings-per-day free allowance), prevent abuse, and understand aggregate usage.
Your settings — theme and preferred voices per language — are stored with your account so they persist across sessions and devices.
We do not sell your data or share it for advertising. We use a small set of service providers strictly to operate Book Reader:
Each processes data only to provide its service to us. We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and service.
We keep account, subscription, settings, and library data for as long as your account is active. Usage events are retained for a limited period for abuse prevention and aggregate analytics. Book text sent for AI voice, translation, or OCR is used to serve your request and not stored long-term. When you delete a book, its file is deleted; when you delete your account, we delete or anonymize the associated data, except where we must retain records to meet legal or accounting obligations.
We use industry-standard measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and reputable providers for authentication and payments. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information and limit what we collect.
Book Reader is for reading books you own or otherwise have the right to read. You are responsible for the content you upload to your library.
Book Reader is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by a new effective date at the top of this page.
